'Bij ons doe je dingen die je nergens anders doet’

Het bestuur van Jazzpodium Drienerlo zit met de handen in het haar. Het eind van de studie is in zicht en de zoektocht naar opvolgers is begonnen. Hoewel de PR-machine op volle toeren draait, blijken die niet zo gemakkelijk te vinden. Ligt het aan de landelijke bezuinigingsplannen? Of spreken de progressieve jazzconcerten studenten niet genoeg aan? Een nieuw bestuur is hard nodig voor een swingende jazzscene op de Campus.

Sport: Volleyballen na werktijd

Het UT-sportcentrum is vanaf woensdagmiddag tussen 16.30 en 18.00 uur het decor van recreatief volleyballen. Bij dit zogeheten ‘volleybaluurtje’ van de UT-kring wordt gespeeld in wisselende combinaties. Al vanaf 2006 kan deze volleybalgroep bogen op een erkende status als subvereniging van de UT-kring. Daarvoor speelde de groep al decennia lang op basis van vrijblijvende deelname zonder dat contributie moest worden betaald. Always fancied to impress friends with your fighting skills like Zorro? Can you think fast or say en garde without a quivering lip? Then learn a new mental and physical way to battle your opponents with accuracy. DSV Gascogne starts introductory classes on fencing. During the eight-week course learn all about fencing with three different types of weapons and ways of duelling in different positions. The course begins on 14 April and concludes with a tournament. From crisis to success

Joop Munsterman, FC Twente’s Chairman and Wegener Press’ former CEO, spoke for two hours on ‘governance in business and sports’ in the Waaier on Wednesday 30 March. Munsterman focused on how to turn organizational failures into success. He emphasized the importance of a strong ‘goal-orientedness,’ being a ‘learning organization’ and of putting ‘culture before structure.’ Hired managers need to fit the existing and needed company culture, according to Munsterman. Finally, forty percent of managers in business organizations should be female. The Institute for Innovation and Governance Studies (IGS) organized the lecture.

Dodgeball

Are you physically fit? Do your flatmates excel in team efforts? Then sign up for a dodgeball tournament. The tournament is on 3 June at the Oude Markt, Enschede. The teams will compete against each other in two different cages set up on the square. If you are rubbish at dogdeball then you can also show off your ‘sporting skills’ during the beer competition at the same time and location. Both tournaments finish with a BBQ at Café Friends Back Stage.

Court case

Dutch law students threaten to take Dutch universities to court. The recently founded Foundation Collective Action Universities will be taking several Dutch universities, including those of Utrecht, Maastricht and Leiden, to court if they cannot soon clarify the need for ‘sky raking’ high student fees when students choose to follow a second study. Announced raises in university fees and other cutbacks caused massive protests on 21 January when students, university teachers and research staff, including the UT’s own Rector Brinksma, participated against these rulings.

Improve your Dutch

Are you keen to improve your Dutch language skills, particularly in reading and writing, but do you lack the time or money to do so through a course? If your Dutch is already relatively well-developed you can now also improve it in your own free time through a free computer program called ‘Lezen en Schrijven!’ (Reading and Writing!), available at the public library in town. Just go to the first floor and ask the friendly staff to help you. Computer use is free of charge.

Everything ok

Anthony Schrag’s art exhibition entitled ‘everything is going to be ok’ (Kloosterstraat 1, Enschede) is still on until 10 April. The controversial artist from ‘dark and angry city’ Glasgow is guided by the motto: ‘It is not art hanging on the wall, but me’. Visitors are submitted to entirely new ways of watching and experiencing art. Schrag’s more daring projects include falling walls, using himself as a catapult of ‘the human pinata’ and taking civil servants hostage.
