Lego League

Het Sportcentrum is zaterdag 26 januari het decor van de First Lego League Benelux finale. Tijdens deze eindstrijd worden jongeren tussen de negen en veertien jaar uitgedaagd om de maatschappelijke rol van techniek en technologie te onderzoeken aan de hand van verschillende opdrachten. Een jury beoordeelt de deelnemende teams, die uit maximaal tien kinderen mogen bestaan, op vier onderdelen: een robotwedstrijd, het robotontwerp, de presentatie van het eigen onderzoek en teamwork. De finale is van elf tot vier uur gratis toegankelijk voor het publiek. Het team dat op alle onderdelen het beste scoort, ontvangt de Champion's Award. Ecumenical service

An ecumenical service will take place on Sunday January 20 at the University of Twente to mark the 100th anniversary of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. Professor Anne van der Meiden will lead the service, and the theme of `spoken language and language of faith' will be addressed. The main language of this service will be several variants of Low Saxon, namely Twents and Westphalian-Plattduuts. Peter Laport will direct the choir. For children 8 years of age and younger, nursery services are available. Native speakers and non-native speakers are welcome to attend.

UT merges with ITC

The University of Twente (UT) will gain a sixth faculty as of January 1, 2010. The International Institute of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC) will be integrated with the UT as a so-called faculty sui generis, unique for its kind, but with the same authority as the other five faculties. The boards of both institutes have made this intention clear. The Supervisory Board of the UT, the University Council and the Business Council of the ITC have yet to agree with the decision.

`This is discrimination'

The Technological Universities of Twente and Eindhoven are discriminating students and PhD-students from Iran by not allowing them to enroll. This is what Bozorgmehr Ziaran, the Iranian ambassador in the Netherlands, says in an interview with this paper. He thinks that all Dutch universities will get a very bad reputation in Iran if the exclusion remains in force. Ziaran says he is in discussion on the matter with the Dutch authorities and has good hopes that the measure will be reversed.
