In the laser micro laboratory two lasers are present, and a third one is on its way. The lasers treat all sorts of materials on micro scale, which results in surfaces with special contact properties in the field of friction, abrasion, and repelling dirt or water. On the basis of these properties, new products can be developed, for example, plastic cups that do not need to be cleaned, or crash helmets where flies will not stick to the surface of the helmet.
The realization of the micro lab costs one and a half million euros. The investment was paid by the Faculty of Engineering Technology and the spin-off company Lightmotif, which will use one of the three lasers. Other users of the lab are PhD students and post docs from the research group of Mechanical Automation and the Applied Laser Technology group of the IMPACT research institute. At the end of the year, nine researchers will work with the new lasers.
