Gone are the days when Korte Hengelosestraat was simply known to be a quiet street leading to the central square. Now this place has an identity and character entirely its own. With designer shops selling items to decorate your home to restaurants catering to a myriad of tastes, this stretch represents the hip and cosmopolitan nature of Enschede.

As we stroll along this street, one tiny shop is sure to catch your attention. Kikado, which has been around for 12 years, is a paradise for young children. It has a unique collection of wooden toys, in eye-catching colors, made completely out of natural materials.

Flanking the other side of the street is a new shop, Decorien. They offer a mix of modern and rustic-style furniture with a selection of home accessories from top international brands like Parlane and Yuka Style. It is also possible to order custom made exclusive items to give your living space a personalized touch.

Olif en Enzo, another classy shop, sells things as varied as Portuguese ceramic pottery to olive oil and vinegar that is poured into beautiful glass bottles of your choice, and the delicious Spanish tapas are not to be missed.

If cheese and nuts make you drool, then de Lekkernij, a new shop, which opened its doors in August 2008, is definitely worth a visit. It stocks more than 250 different varieties of cheese and nuts from all around the world.

But if you are looking for hand pounded, fresh spices or you have an exotic recipe in mind, head over to Adema. It stocks specialty spices, herbs and tea blends from all over the world. The average cost of most spices are around two euros per 100 grams. The owners have made a list of all the spices with their names in different languages and are happy to provide recipes and information on the health benefits.

Bon- Bons and cakes can be found at Jagers bakery just next to Kikado. This place has been around for more than 85 years and has won many awards. The owners are proud of the variety and the freshness of the mouth watering delights on offer.

Just a stone's throw from the train station is Beans and Bagels - the name says it all - fresh baked bagels and gigantic cups of steaming cappuccino are served in a bistro-style atmosphere. Further down the street, another eatery is Wok to Go, which specializes in Oriental cuisine with the emphasis on quick take away food.

So, head out this weekend to explore this enchanting street. Chances are that you will be left amazed.
