Marieke Lam prefers the refreshing taste of lemon-flavored ice cream in the summertime, and she plans to spend her summer holiday studying. When she was young, her parents owned their own fruit company. `In order for my parents to smoothly operate the company, we took our holidays within a half-hour drive from Nijmegen, mainly to Center Parcs,' she says.

Mondwa Mwiya will not be going away this summer. Instead, he plans to stay in Enschede to finish work for his master's thesis, and then perhaps he will take a short trip to visit a friend in Groningen. As a child, he spent his vacations on Safari with his large family of six in his native Zambia. If he had to choose a flavor of ice cream then it would definitely be vanilla!

Muhammad Rashid

Muhammad Rashid would like to spend a few days in Spain this summer. At the top of his to-do list in Spain is spending some time at the beach and visiting the famed Al-Hambra Complex. When he was living in Pakistan, he used to travel to the mountainous northern part of the country every summer to see the snowfall. According to Rashid, who has a preference for vanilla ice cream, it is really great to enjoy the snowfall when the rest of the country experiences sweltering heat, with temperatures rising to 48 degrees Celsius!

Erik van Dijk
Enschede, Netherlands, Master's candidate Public Administration
Dijk says, `I'm finishing my master's thesis on the Effects of International Student Mobility at Dutch Universities and that will take me until September to complete.' And then, as a sort celebration, he plans to spend time on the island of Curaçao. Why do you like Curaçao? Dijk says, `The island people are really friendly, and besides this, I can speak Dutch. Curaçao is some 7,000 kilometers away from the Netherlands, and you can still speak Dutch. The weather is always good.' He recalls spending holidays with his parents in France and Austria. When in Enschede, he likes to grab a cookie caramel ice cream cone from the Old Market.

Wissam Assaad

This summer, Wissam Assaad plans to visit his family and friends in his hometown in Lebanon. Besides enjoying the warm Mediterranean weather, he is all set to swim in the sea and do some sports on the beaches of Saida. He usually spends his summer holidays in this manner. Assaad's favorite ice cream flavor is chocolate.

This summer Tian Gang plans to visit his girlfriend in sunny California. She is doing her internship at Stanford University. Together they plan to visit the usual touristy spots. He grew up in China and every summer his family would go over to his grandparents' house. His favorite flavor of ice cream is undoubtedly Rum `n' Raisin.

`I will be going home after 2 years,' says Meenakshi. She says she really misses her family and friends and is looking forward to this trip back home. In the summer, she can remember how hot the weather was in her hometown of Maharashtra, India. She and her family would spend the summer relaxing at home or visiting their relatives. She loves to have a strawberry ice cream to beat the summer heat.

Meltem Ucer and Muhammed Donmez
Turkey, Master's candidates, Business Administration
`This summer we plan to go to Turkey for four weeks,' say Ucer and Donmez. Ucer plans to spend a week visiting her parents. Then she and Donmez, along with a few other friends, will head to the Turkish coast for the sun, sea and sand. Both remember spending the summer holidays relaxing on the beach. Donmez also used to enjoy the thrill of deep sea diving. Meltem loves vanilla ice cream, and chocolate is Donmez's favorite flavor.

Saeed Sedghi
Iran, PhD candidate, Computer Science
Sedghi will visit Iran for a month. `I plan go to Isfahan which has a shrine for Shia Muslims and to the Vang church. `This church,' he adds, `is around 500 years old and is famous for a single strand of hair on which is inscribed a line from the Bible.' During the summer months in Iran, he spent his holidays swimming, jogging or clubbing. He would definitely choose vanilla-flavor ice cream.
