For anybody who has known the pain of a muscle sprain, ligament tear or simply a stiff joint, the campus sports physical therapist, Rene Polman, is a divine blessing.
Initially the physical therapy practice was located in the cabins next to Vrijhof. But earlier this year, it moved to the 2nd floor in the Langezijds building on campus.
The stairs are not a deterrent for his patients as most of them have no problem climbing stairs. And for those completely immobile, he offers home visits or referrals to his other clinic at the Hogeschool Saxion in Enschede.
In three month's time, the clinic on campus will relocate again to the building that currently houses the campus bookshop. Polman thinks this new location is better suited with more open spaces to mobilize his patients.
The practice is open on weekdays from 8:00 am to 8:30 pm. During set office hours, a physical therapist is available for walk-in consultations. Only an initial diagnosis is made and further advice is provided.
Braces, crutches and many other ambulatory devices can be rented at his clinic. Polman also supplies educational leaflets about a variety of common problems.
Being in practice for the last 29 years, he can offer valuable advice to students to help prevent sports or work injuries from occurring. He allows his patients to borrow orthopedic products to see if they really work for them. His clinic has a fully equipped exercise room with state of the art Electrotherapy, Myofeedback and Ultrasound machines.
It is not necessary to have a physicians' referral to visit a physical therapist in the Netherlands. The physical therapists can make the initial diagnosis and help patients expedite the hospital referral process.
So next time you sustain a muscular injury or have RSI problems, do not delay. A visit in time to the physical therapist may help prevent or limit your sufferings.
