West African Dance Workshop

Come dance to the ancient rhythms of African music dating back thousands of years to the Old Mali Empire, including Mali, Senegal, and Burkina Faso. This workshop is offered to all UT students, who want to learn more about this style of dance originating from various West African ethnic groups and previous dance experience is not necessary to join in the fun. Joke Sanchez, an expert dance instructor, will guide participants through the movements and help them to understand the history and cultural background of the dance and its relationship to the rhythm of the music.

There will be two workshops offered on Saturday, April 4 and Sunday, April 5 from 1:30 to 4:00pm in the Audiozaal in the Vrijhof. Participation costs range from €20 to €30. The ankle injuries of former professional footballer Marco van Basten, who is the subject of the recently released series BASTA, are at the centre of research by UT and Amsterdam UMC. The researchers are working on new methods to detect ankle damage at an earlier stage.
