Big world of nanotechnology

Tamalika Banerjee has been working, as a post-doc in the NanoElectronics group at the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology at the University of Twente, since 2002. Though initially involved with research on superconductors, she moved to the exciting and technologically-rich arena of Spintronics during her post-doc years at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston. `Spintronics,' she says, `addresses the need for today's generation of faster and smaller devices with added functionalities.'

At the heart of these devices are ferromagnetic materials which are capable of storing information in tiny regions called `bits.' Researchers like her are involved in reducing the size of these `bits,' thereby they are enhancing the storage capabilities of hard disks, iPods and music players.

MESA+ Institute at the University of Twente is one of the world's largest nanotechnology institutes, delivering competitive and successful high-quality research in this area. `Armed with the necessary growth and fabrication techniques which are intricately maintained by a team of extremely dedicated staff; it has been a great place to work,' she says.

Banerjee is very excited about the new Nanolab, which hopefully will be ready by June 2009. `The new Nanolab will have an advanced cleanroom, and in addition other laboratories in its vicinity, which depend on cleanroom technology. This infrastructure, due to its location, vibration-free flooring, extra space, and sophisticated equipment, will enable scientists to perform sensitive, high-resolution and multi-disciplinary research work,' she adds enthusiastically.

Does the current controversy regarding the safety aspect of working with nanoparticles give her sleepless nights? Apparently not. She stresses that her research involves working in a closed ultrahigh vacuum environment, and she does not come in close proximity with undesirable nanoparticles. She further emphasizes that the cleanroom staff trains every user on a detailed safety protocol that has to be strictly adhered to.

Tamalika comes from the culturally-rich land of India. So it is no surprise that this young lady was groomed in classical Indian music and dance from the age of three. She admits that her hectic research work, in addition to coaching PhD students, and contributing to the group's educational tasks, leaves her little time to pursue other interests. She sadly reflects that India has undergone a massive `cultural' revolution during the past decade.

The `Bollywood culture' has gained predominance over the richness of classical Indian music or the soothing compositions of Nobel laureate Guru Rabindranath Tagore. `Perhaps a revival or awareness will occur soon,' she muses hopefully. She also misses the endless discussions on the social, political and economical scenarios in India, over a cup of refreshing Darjeeling tea. She makes up for it with the numerous weekend dinners with her colleagues, from all parts of the world, discussing a range of topics. Though she has traveled extensively around the world, she candidly admits that it is the greenery and stillness of Enschede that attracts her the most.

What has life taught this dynamic, young researcher? `The necessity of inculcating discipline, honesty, precise planning and the vision to be successful in all endeavors that I undertake,' says this articulate lady. Her life's sojourn has led her across the world. Hopefully Twente continues to play a major role in her quest
