Exercise your way to fitness

Holiday time is here and the University has taken ample care to ensure that students and employees have no excuse to gain extra pounds. The gym facilities at the Sports Centrum on campus are really world-class. More than 150 students and employees make use of the gym facilities. In addition to getting fit, the gym also provides `a meeting ground for like-minded people,' says Dhaval Vyas, a Phd student at the University.

The plethora of exercise equipment available ranges from steppers, spin cycles, cross trainers and ellipticals to specialized equipment that improves your aerobic fitness levels and muscle-tone. The gym has rowers, which provide many heath benefits by working major muscle groups and providing users with an impact-free way of exercising.

Most of the exercise equipment comes with a fitness monitor to preset your workout time, minimum speed, maximum speed and some of the equipment even offers a calorie counter to keep track of the calories burnt during a workout.

In addition to using the equipment, one can make use of the range of weights that build stamina and muscle-tone. Plus there are the exercise mats and the exercise balls. Exercise balls put your body in an unstable position letting your legs and abdomen contract to keep you from falling off the ball.

Charts posted on the walls of the gym offer advice on what exercises can be preformed on exercise balls to strengthen various portions of the body. Before one is allowed to start using the equipment, it is mandatory to follow a basic fitness course, which is offered to students in both English and Dutch. The course offers a basic introduction and safety guidelines for using all exercise equipment.

If there are any queries, the friendly trainers can offer you advice on what exercise routines are ideally suited for you. And the best part of all this is that it is completely free for employees this year. Students, however, have to pay a 65 euros per year fee to make use of the facilities. The gym is open everyday from 8.30am to 11.30pm.
