Our neighboring country of Germany is famous for its historic Christmas markets, and in the evening as darkness falls, the city centers are bathed in the glow of twinkling lights. Every year busloads full of tourist travel over the border to the cities of Osnabrück and Münster to discover hundreds of outdoor stalls where vendors sell products mostly made by hand. The aroma of roasted almonds fills the air. You can drink a cup of steaming Glühwein (warm mulled wine) or savor a gingerbread cookie as you stroll along the festively decorated stalls nestled below old churches.
In 2004 the Christmas market in Osnabrück was selected as the most beautiful market in northern Germany. Not only is the Christmas market in Osnabrück famous, so is the Christmas market in Münster. In the historic city center of Münster at the Weihnachstmärkte (street market), you will find at least five different Christmas markets within a five-minute walking distance from each other with over 250 stalls that look like tiny huts forming a small village.
The student organization, Erasmus Student Network (ESN) has organized a city trip on Sunday, December 16 to the Christmas market in Münster. The costs for this trip to Münster will be 7.50 euros.
The Christmas markets in Osnabrück and Münster are open on November 26 to December 23, opening times are from 12 - 9pm.
It is possible to visit a Christmas market in Germany or other countries by train.
