The Indian Students Association at the University of Twente celebrated Diwali, the Festival of Lights, last Saturday at the Atrium in the Bastille building. The function started off with a prayer song to invoke the blessings from the Indian goddess of wealth, Lakshmi, whose birthday is celebrated on this day. This was followed by a presentation explaining the significance of Diwali.

Participants enjoyed a host of cultural programs, ranging from classical dances, such as Bharatnatyam and modern Bollywood dances to a soothing Indian instrumental recital. Other highlights included a Tamil song and a hilarious comedy show.

The star attraction of the event was the delicious Indian buffet, catered by the Taj Mahal restaurant in Hengelo. The buffet included mouth-watering dishes such as a cottage cheese preparation called mutter paneer, chick peas simmered in gravy, chicken korma, lamb curry and a milk-based dessert, phirni that was garnished with almonds and pistachios.

Approximately 150 guests attended the event and more than half of these attendees were people coming from different corners of the world: Turkey, Romania, Portugal, Germany, Pakistan, China to name a few, and of course, Holland and India. This culturally rich diversity gave color to the program, especially during the open-house dance event when everybody danced in their own unique style to Indian hit songs. The game show was entertaining with the two final winners sharing their prize of chocolates with the entire crowd. The event was a grand success-showcasing the rich culture of India and the gracious hospitality its people.
