This menu was specially created because the chosen charities for this year are education projects in Thailand and Haiti. In Thailand, schools for Burmese refugee camps are being built by ZOA refugee care and in Haiti, the Woord en Daad Foundation is building vocational schools and renovating primary schools.
Happietaria Enschede operates only by the efforts of volunteers and sponsors. Last year the restaurant collected 80,000 euros for charity and treasurer Daniël Meel hopes to collect a hundred thousand this year. `That depends mainly on the turnover during the first two weeks. The last two weeks are usually busy, but in the beginning, it's always a small turnout,' according to Meel.
Students manage the Happietaria Enschede, but it reaches out to a much broader public than just students. Meel: `From experience we know that the student/citizen ratio is 50/50. We try to make sure the meals are affordable for students as well as the general public.' A menu, which consists of an appetizer, a main course and dessert, will cost fifteen to twenty euros. Depending on the amount of support from sponsors, nearly all of the money will be donated to the two charities.
