Honorary doctorate for Israeli Ora Kedem

Israeli professor Ora Kedem (age 82) will receive an honorary doctorate degree from the University of Twente on November 30. Kedem is Emeritus Professor of Desalination and Water Technology for the Ben Gurion Univerity and professor at the Weizmann Institute of Science in the city of Rehevoth, forty-kilometers below Tel Aviv.

Ora Kedem will receive her honorary doctorate because she was put forward by Dr. Matthias Wessling, professor of Membrane Technology, within the faculty of Science and Technology.

Ora Kedem published her first scientific article in 1951 and she is still active in the field of Membrane Technology, despite her age. She has received considerable recognition for her research in both the fields of technology and natural membranes. In selected fields of study, she has published pioneering articles. Kedem has received a diverse collection of international distinction awards for her work covering the span of her long career. She is one of the founders of the modern Ben Gurion University in Be'er Sheva.

Kedem's research is of both national and strategic interest: it makes an enormous contribution to the development of desalination membranes, which might solve the water shortage in the Middle East. A great political merit can be attributed to her success in bringing Israeli and German scientists closer together. For this act, she received the honor of the German Bundesverdienstkreuz award.
