The art loan service in the Vrijhof has reopened. `We have more room and a large window. Now you can see what the art looks like in daylight,' says Tessa Lieffering, employee of the Vrijhof Culture Center.
Students and employees can choose from a total collection of over 800 works of art, a quarter of which is in stock at the art loan. The collection varies from drawings and paintings to screen prints and photographs in various styles. It is mostly modern and abstract, but more representative work can also be found. `We have a good mix of known and unknown work from young, new artists,' claims Lieffering.
She reports that there is a lot of interest for the borrowing of art. Employees hear via word of mouth about the art loan. `Even during the reconstruction, when we were housed in a small room in the top of the Vrijhof, there were astonishing amounts of customers. Among students we're less known, but there is an upward trend. Students change their art more often, while employees like looking at the same work of art all day.'
Lieffering -- herself an artist -- highly recommends borrowing a painting or other form of art. `It's nice to look at something other than your computer screen. Art is more than wall decoration. I discover new things every time I look at a work of art; you keep looking at it and you can dream away with it. To me it is a form of being engrossed, the ways others read books.'
The art loan is open every Tuesday and Thursday from 12.00-1:30 pm and on appointment, in room 136 in the Vrijhof. Students and employees can borrow art for free, under the condition that the work doesn't leave the UT campus. The maximum borrowing period is one year for students and two years for employees.
