At the moment Van den Akker is director of the Kramerslaboratorium for Physical Technology of the Faculty of Applied Physics of the TUD, and director of the interfacultary research centre Mastering the Molecules in Manufacturing. He is also, among other things, board member of the Dutch Engineers Society KIvI, department of Technical Physics. Van den Akker is at the moment meeting all OSPT professors. Their main topic of conversation will be the future of the OSPT.

On 1 March 2001 Prof.dr.ir. H.E.A. van den Akker, professor in Delft, was appointed as the director of the Research School Process Technology (OSPT), as successor to Prof.dr.ir. W.P.M. van Swaaij. His scientific core activity is the area of transport phenomena.
