Over six-hundred employees use the new possibility for flexible composition of part of their terms of employment for 2002. This is shown by a preliminary count from the Personnel Department (PA&O), where it is expected that forms will trickle in until this week, submitted via the faculties and services.

Most popular is buying a pc or bicycle via a scheme attractive for tax purposes or through giving up days off. It is estimated that over ninety percent will choose this.

Exchanging days for money (or vice versa), building up educational leave or extending parenting leave therefore occurs in less than ten percent of the cases.

PA&O does not yet have a detailed understanding of the choices made. Employees did set down their choice in the computer simulation model before the deadline of 1 December, but the application is not officially counted until the printed version is in - ratified by the relevant service or faculty. It is also unclear whether the choices made, like the purchase of a bicycle, will indeed by realised in 2002.

It is clear that the choices made by staff have a collective value of approximately 1.3 million guilder.

UT students invited by ESA to test octopus-inspired robot arm

A group of UT bachelor’s students was selected by the European Space Agency’s academy programme, to work on a project with an octopus-inspired tentacle that can remove space debris. This November, the team called RobOcto, is invited to test their prototype at the ESA ESTEC facility in Noordwijk.
