Dutch course for aio's success

The intensive week-long courses on Dutch language and culture organised by the International Office are a success. They are aimed at employees who will be here for four years or more, mostly aio's therefore.

There is a huge demand for this opportunity to learn Dutch. 'At the moment we are fully booked until January', says Frits Spoek, International Office, 'because this is a new initiative there is a backlog of people who would have liked to have done this before but never had the chance.'

The courses are paid for by the faculties. 'I do not know how the faculties arrange it with their aio's,' says Spoek. 'It may be that the course is paid for out of their facilities budget.' And although it may be useful to both aio and faculty if the aio learns Dutch, it is the faculties' decision whether or not the aio's are allowed time to attend this course, according tot Spoek. In reaction to the suggestion to also offer the course on weekends, Spoek says: 'I am afraid that the teachers would not like to do that.'

When, after the first intensive course, people want to continue with their study of Dutch, the International Office also helps them. 'We provide the space and administrative support with the payment of the teachers.'
