Many computers at the UT have again been hit by a virus. Last week mainly members of staff in the Vrijhof received e-mails with an attachment called 'Joke'. The CIV put all servers off-line immediately after being notified.
'Joke' is comparable to the destructive and very contagious I-love-you virus that infected millions of computers on campus, in the Netherlands and all over the world. Then mainly JPEG and MP3 files were damaged. Essential software was spared.
'Joke', like the I-love-you virus, spreads itself. As soon as the receiver clicks on the destructive attachment the virus opens the address book of the e-mail programme. The programme uses the addresses to multiply itself. Computer users receiving an e-mail with subject 'Joke', should not open the e-mail but throw it away immediately. It is then also advisable to empty the deleted files box.
