After two hours students were wapping cheaper

Give all students a free wap-phone, KPN and the UT reasoned, and the clever applications shoot up like mushrooms. And so it happened. But not in the way the generous givers had imagined.

Within two hours of the official handing-out of the first mobile phones, two weeks ago on Wednesday, UT-students managed their mobile internetting below the KPN-rates. Instead of 47 cents a minute, they paid only 35. How is this possible?

Because student Edwin Woudt has opened his own wap-gateway. A gateway is, in a way, a collection-point for wap-traffic, where web-sites are made into wap-pages. Whoever dials up through KPN will usually end up on the CIV wap-gateway. Because you are using a 06-number this will cost you 47 cents a minute during peak hours. This is a lot, also according to the CIV.

Dialling up through the UT-number of Woudt (see his web-site www.goedkoperwappen.com) only costs 35 cents as this is a fixed connection. Why did he open his gateway? 'To show that it can be done cheaper', he writes on his site. Woudt hopes that the CIV will lower their prices.' Even better would be if the CIV would set up a dial-up number within a closed usergroup: then you can wap for 18 cents a minute during the day.' Another external gateway has already reported in. A week ago all students received an offer from MoBgo in their UT-mailbox. This wap-gateway-provider asks: 'Did you receive a mobile wap-phone from KPN? If so...you can now wap via the MoBgo starting page.' MoBgo, the company mails, offers 'a number of interesting links' to ready wap-pages. It does not say how much MoBgo costs. They do promise a saving on your phone bill.
