Award surprises young PhD-student

| Redactie

The New Year is off to a good start for PhD student Suze van Leeuwen. On January 8 she received the Ernst Bayer Preis from the Separation Sciences workgroup of the `Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker,' the German Chemistry Association. The prize rewards young scientists for a publication on analytical separation techniques.

Van Leeuwen (24) did not receive the award for her current PhD work at the chemical analysis group of the faculty of Science & Technology, but for previous research in the same group. The road to her thesis was unusual, because Suze van Leeuwen came from a professional university and was getting her master's degree in chemical analysis. `Both sides were so satisfied with the results that I soon started as a research assistant. At some point they asked if I wanted to get my PhD there. At first it was unclear whether I could do that, or that I had to get my master's first.' It became a combination of the two. January 2005 she started her PhD research while still doing courses for her master's.

Van Leeuwen received the Ernst Bayer Preis for research on a device that can simulate the biological reaction of medicine in the body. The thousand euros that come with the award are for Van Leeuwen to spend. Nice timing: `I've been without a car since Christmas, so I think I will use the money to buy a new one.'
