Campus geese kept safely caged

They are darlings of the UT: the geese that have been scuttling around campus for years. So to prepare for the advancing bird flu, Facility Management decided to protect these animals. Two weeks ago, they were housed in a wire netting cage behind Erve Holzik. ISS Landscaping personnel is taking care of the gaggle.

According to Tom Koppen, manager of Facility Management, catching the geese was no easy task. `They were too smart for the trap we set between Langezijds and the flag poles. The bread we scattered was eaten mostly by other hungry birds. Eventually, ISS Landscaping personnel managed to catch most of the geese anyway. Several are still missing and are probably nesting. Once they're found, they will be caged as well.'

The campus geese closely resemble the rare Twente Country Goose, as was discovered two years ago. This qualified a number of the animals for the rebreeding program of this rare species. Koppen: `We called in the Rare Pet Races Foundation, an organization fighting for the survival of the Twente Country Goose. They helped us select the best type of food, currently provided by Landscaping personnel. A vet was also involved in the process.' Koppen hopes they will be able to release the geese shortly. `We want to vaccinate them as soon as possible.'
