Chairman of the Executive Board Anne Flierman, who signed the agreement on behalf of the UT, considers the new phenomenon one of the pieces of a larger puzzle, which should take a concrete and workable shape in the near future. Together with Chairman Cor Boom of Saxion University, he is working on proposals to stimulate the growth of start-ups. Flierman thinks these proposals will include the knowledge-facilitating role of larger businesses in Twente towards spin-offs. `Companies like Grolsch or Thales could “adopt” a start-up with potential for growth.'
Opportunity zones are regional areas where start-ups and fast growing companies can get additional support. The Ministry of Economic Affairs is allocating a sum of 400,000 euros over a period of five years for each of the opportunity zones. That money is to be used in part to hire a manager, who will help the start-ups build their companies.
